Overview

Computer Studies as a subject was originally offered at Grey High School as a seventh subject only, with classes outside the normal school hours. Since 2006 the new FET syllabus was introduced and the Grade 10 students started with Information Technology as a subject.

Why study IT?

Information Technology is for students who are interested in how computers process data, how programs are written and how networks are used to transmit data. The subject is designed to develop higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills – the ability to understand relationships and interdependencies between concepts, structures and processes and the application of an authentic methodology to solve problems in an irregular range of cases. It also teaches the ability to use the facilities of technology purposefully and effectively and to manipulate and analyse information in the dynamic knowledge domain of today.

Who should take the Subject?

The student most likely to succeed is one showing evidence of sound communication skills in English and a better than average ability in Mathematics. The subject requires logical thinking and problem-solving skills, and an aptitude for computers that goes beyond the use of applications and game playing.

Computer Olympiad

IT students take part in the yearly Computer Olympiad which is held under the auspices of the Computer Society of South Africa. The first round is a written test, marked internally and the second round is a set of programming tasks set in a Start and an Open Division.
