Soon after the landing of the British Settlers in 1820, a small but flourishing settlement existed on the shores of Algoa Bay. Any form of organised education, however, was sadly lacking until the arrival of a Scottish graduate named John Paterson, who must be given most of the credit for establishing a small state-aided school in Chapel Street.

Grey Cricket had a good start to 2018 when the 1st and 2nd teams had resounding victories over quality opposition. The 1st XI beat the much vaunted Affies team from Pretoria at the Grey Festival in Bloemfontein.  Affies 129 all out.  LJ Du Preez 3/15.  Grey 178/7 declared Tiaan van Vuuren 85*.  Affies 2nd innings 30/2.  Grey won on 1st innings.   The 2nd XI also had a good win over Paarl Boys' 2nd in Graaff Reinet. Paarl Boys' 128 all out.  Martin Ellis 4 for 26). Grey 2nd 130 for 4.  Tristan van Breda 41*.  Grey won by 6 wickets.
